Perth-based Midland Brick, a renowned brick manufacturer now part of the BGC Group, boasts a 70-year legacy. When it came time to replace one of its ageing wheel loaders, Midland Brick had several key considerations, primarily focusing on emissions due to its diesel-powered fleet. Midland Brick integrated an XCMG electric wheel loader into its fleet through Yellowgate’s rental program, with the option to purchase after the rental period. This collaboration marks a significant step towards sustainable operations for Midland Brick.
Pioneering Sustainable Solutions with Electric Wheel Loaders
Kristian Walter, Midland Brick’s procurement manager, recalls, “We consulted all major brands in the construction and mining equipment industry, but none offered an alternative to diesel engines at that time.” Midland Brick found its solution in the XC968-EV electric wheel loader from XCMG. “When XCMG introduced this loader, it immediately caught our attention,” says Walter. “We evaluated it as a capital expenditure (CAPEX), which would require a substantial upfront financial commitment.”
Chris McRae, managing director of Yellowgate, explains that businesses typically adhere to CAPEX budgets, halting spending if they exceed these limits. Yellowgate steps in by supplying the equipment, allowing businesses to benefit immediately and decide later if they want to purchase it. If Midland Brick chooses not to buy the XCMG electric wheel loader after the trial, Yellowgate will reclaim it for rental or resale. This offers Midland Brick a risk-free opportunity to test the electric machine’s suitability. Yellowgate’s support extends beyond equipment rental. McRae notes, “We can grow with businesses, offering 12-month commitments to help them focus on their immediate needs.”
The electric wheel loader represents the first transaction between XCMG and Yellowgate, hinting at potential future collaborations. The XC968-EV’s energy efficiency aligned perfectly with Midland Brick’s strategy to enhance energy efficiency, though initial hesitation stemmed from their lack of experience with XCMG. Yellowgate’s Rent Now, Buy Later solution facilitated Midland Brick’s access to the necessary machinery without the financial strain of outright purchase. This model benefits businesses experiencing growth, recovery, or limited access to purchase funds. Steve Lihou, XCMG’s mining business development manager, highlights the XC968-EV’s features: an 18.8-tonne operating mass, 280kW rated power, 3.2-cubic metre bucket capacity, and a 5.8-tonne rated load. Walter adds, “The electric loader simplifies on-site material handling. It’s quieter, has no emissions, and is easier to charge than refuel.” Midland Brick is pleased with the electric loader’s performance and sees Yellowgate as a key partner for future procurement and rental solutions. Walter states, “We’re open to exploring more innovative solutions with Yellowgate.”
